Back Yard Photos & Plants : 2002

Back Yard - Nov 2001Like the Front Yard, the Back Yard had very little done with it in the way of landscaping - a few patches of nondescript common daylilies along the privacy fence, Bishop's Weed (aka Snow-on-the-Mountain) along the side of the garage, some stunted shrubs under the Black Walnut tree, and a decent lawn. My housemate was particularly keen on growing roses, so with the Back Yard's southern exposure I pretty much gave him free rein.

First Rose Plants - April 2002Believe it or not, this is how it all started. Two lonely little climbing roses flanking the back walk to the garage -- hardly more than a couple of bundles of sticks. We hadn't even found the arched rose trellis yet, though we were looking every weekend. They're almost impossible to make out, even in the orignal print, but they are there.

April of 2002 was very warm, and we were very anxious to get started, so we started buying roses, annuals and perennials and digging new beds in April and May. Big mistake!
Cold Snap - May 2002In spite of throwing together quick makeshift cold frames of wood and plastic sheeting, we lost almost a third of what we had bought when the cold snap hit the third week of May! I guess we were just lucky that the roses survived.

Mixed Annuals & Perennials - late June 2002But, as you can see here, with a little care and a few extra plants, the mixed annuals & perennials along the fence recovered nicely by the end of June.
