We also found some climbing hydrangea and trellises to put along the north face of the garage, facing the house. We didn't actually get them in the ground until mid-August, but they seem to have settled in by the fall (at least they were blooming) so hopefully their root systems developed enough to survive the winter. By August the back yard looked like this:

We planted Rose Penta in front of the Climbing Hydrangea at the back of the garage, and had a couple of hanging baskets of Impatiens and Bacopa suspended from the soffit above. There were some low-wattage yard lights that came with the house, and I found the rest of them in a box in the garage, so I put out all of them around the back yard. It looks really pretty at night (the picture doesn't do it justice).
