Front Yard - May 2002When I bought my first house in December 2001, I was essentially starting with a blank slate. I had a nice front yard and a few shrubs in front. (The picture is from May 2002, before I got started making changes.) Several of the shrubs got some sort of blight, winter kill or viral, I'm not sure. I had spent the winter and spring reading books, searching the internet, and planning, planning, planning. (I read books and websites and watched shows on HGTV for ideas. I also got to talk to Melinda Myers at Stein's; she's a true Wisconsin treasure who hosts radio and TV shows and writes books about gardening. Her book, The Garden Book for Wisconsin, was my favorite resource for plant information. Check the Resources page for some of the other books and websites I used, as well as the garden centers and nurseries we shopped.)

The front of the house has a northern exposure, so I felt I should choose plants for partial and full shade.Front Yard May 2002 I drew up plans and plant lists, cruised the nurseries and garden centers and modified both. Read more and made further changes to the lists and plans. Then Memorial Day weekend I started making my changes.
