The shrubs were the first to go, though I managed to salvage the three in front to reuse in the back yard. I slightly enlarged the bed on the right-hand side and added a brick border.
For foundation plantings (to hide the ugly concrete), on the left I planted four Alpine Currant (Ribes alpinum) and on the right three Dwarf Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus 'Koreana').
A week later I added a Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca 'Conica') to anchor the corner. I'm told this spruce will only grow about an inch a year, possibly reaching 8 feet in height eventually. Considering it's barely 3 feet tall now, I've got a few years to decide if I like it!!
To complete the "shrub anchors" for my landscaping, I chose to flank the walk up from the street with Annabelle Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle') near the house and Red Flower Carpet Rose (Rosa hybrid) near the sidewalk.
Next I wanted to plant some perennials, but I couldn't make up my mind what I wanted -- except I wanted Astilbe. In front of the three Burning Bush, I planted several varieties of Astilbe: dark pink Sprite Dwarf (Astilbe simplicifolia 'Sprite'), red Fanal (Astilbe x Arendsii 'Fanal'), pale pink Rheinland (Astilbe x Arendsii 'Rheinland'), and behind the Burning Bush I planted white Goat's-beard (Aruncus dioicus) .
