The weather was so bad in May I didn't realize how much the sun was rising in the sky. Guess what? Even on the north side of the house, I get pretty much full sun from mid-May through mid-September -- way too much sun for the Astilbe. All but the Sprites burned to some degree, the Goat's-beard kept dying back whenever it reached 6 to 8 inches high (though it keeps trying to grow; I've got green shoots from all 6 plants even in October). Next year, they get transplanted to the side yard under the Black Walnut tree!
I experimented with a few annuals this year, also. Again, I mostly chose shade-tolerant species, thinking the north side of the house would be shadier than it turned out to be. But I had lots better luck with the annuals than I did with the Astilbe. The two primary annual fillers I chose were Coleus (Coleus x hybridus, sorry I didn't save the tags, so I don't know the specific variety) and Double Impatiens (Impatiens x wallerana 'Fiesta Pink Ruffle', 'Tioga(tm) Peach', 'Tioga(tm) Rose on White' & 'Tioga(tm) Lavender'). They didn't just grow well, they FLOURISHED.
(You can get an idea from the picture to the right - early August - and the panoramic image at the bottom of the page from late August -- after I had cut the Coleus back twice and the Impatiens back once!) I also put in Tuberous Begonia (Begonia x tuberhybrida 'Ornament Scarlet' & 'Ornament Yellow') and Celosia (Celosia argentea 'Plumosa' cultivar) near the front door and Gayfeather (Liatris spicata) and Beardtongue (Penstemon 'Prairie Dusk') on the corner near the Dwarf Alberta Spruce. These last two didn't do as well, so I probably won't replant them next year, at least not in front.
