Last of all, in September, I created large beds stretching the 12 feet or so from the Annabelle Hydrangea to the Red Flower Carpet Rose on each side of the front walk to create bulb beds for spring bulbs. I planted two Potentilla (Potentilla fruticosa 'Goldfinger') on each side, between the Hydrangea and the Rose, and buried a LOT of bulbs all around in both beds:
Tulips (Tulipa, Darwin hybrid assortment), of course, and Daffodils (Narcissus x hybridus, mixed varieties), Crocus (Crocus vernus, mixed varieties), Allium (Allium seneceus 'Glaucum'), Galanthus (Galanthus nivalis), Anemone (Anemone blanda, mixed varieties), Dutch Iris (Iris xiphium, mixed varieties), and Grape Hyacinth (Muscari armeniacum).
... Another shot of the Hydrangea/Potentilla/Rose/Bulb beds, from a different angle.
I put in a mowing edge with the brick edging around the new bulb beds and added one to the large front bed I had created earlier in the summer, as well as extending the bed around to the right of the house in preparation for planting next year (this is where I'll move the Astilbe).
And one more picture ... Actually, this was taken mid-February 2003. We haven't had much snow yet this winter. I'm starting to worry about the survival of the plants this spring and summer!
