Enlarged Rose Bed - May 2003Throughout the Summer we would be working on enlarging the existing Rose beds and adding additional beds. And I would be working on adding a brick border with mowing edge around all the beds. It's an ongoing project which I didn't expect to finish until the cooler Fall temperatures arrived. This picture is from mid-May, before the Roses filled in, but you can already see the changes being made.

Newly Enlarged 'Rose Circle' Raised Bed - May 2003In the meantime, I had other projects to tackle in the Back Yard. A "quickie" project was adding a window box to the side window of the garage (though it would be two months before I filled it with plants -- we tried miniature Roses, but the heat was just too intense for them) and mounting a window box support to the railing of the back door stoop (where the miniature Roses thrive).

My roomie wanted the 'Rose Circle' - the raised bed planted with Roses and centered on a concrete urn containing two miniature Roses - enlarged and a retaining wall built for it. I had built the 'racetrack oval' retaining wall around the raised bed at the back of the yard in 2002, so this was a fairly straight-forward project for me. I finished in three days at the end of May, starting on Memorial Day. The top picture at right is "before", and the bottom picture is "after". I'm rather pleased with the results!

Fountain and Ferns - June 2003In the back right corner of the picture above, you can glimpse my other late Spring project: I added a fountain surrounded by Ferns to the corner of the fence by the garage. This one was all my idea, so don't blame my roomie! It's another project which was more difficult in the execution than it should have been. Originally, I used the ideas from several web sites and books to create a simple fountain in a pot filled with rocks, cutting a hole in the side of the pot for the power cord. The only problem with that was that I couldn't get a water-tight seal around the cord, even after using three different sealants. Finally, I bought another pot, a small decorative birdbath and an small urn for the top and ended up with the fountain pictured here (in mid-June).
