In addition to adding a brick border to the enlarged Rose beds, I added a brick mowing strip to the edging along the L-shaped bed that runs along the garage wall and down the west fence. And I installed a soaker hose running the entire length of the bed, too. This shot shows the partially completed brick edge and the soaker hose set out before burying under the mulch.
A rabbit got into the yard by squeezing under the fence. When I spotted him, he had already chomped up two Morning Glories and was starting to work on a third. I chased him out of the yard PDQ! Chipmunks have been doing that regularly, but this was the first time we know of that a rabbit got in the yard. So I started cutting pieces of half-inch wire mesh (hardware cloth) and stapling them at the bottom of the fence, even digging into the ground an inch or two to help discourage the chippies. By Labor Day I had only done about half the fence, so the chipmunks were still finding their way in, but at least the rabbits stayed out (so they started eating stuff in the front yard!).
A baby Robin fell into the fountain when I was setting it up. I had not yet filled the ground-level pot (the reservoir) with stones to prevent just such an accident. So I had to keep scooting him out of the way with a bamboo stake while I carefully filled the pot with stones to give him something to stand on and eventually, when I reached the rim, he was able to hop out onto the ground. He was quite bedraggled, and it took a couple of hours until he had dried off enough to fly away. I never got a picture of the rabbit (I wasn't thinking about the camera, just getting the little bugger out of my yard before he did any more damage), so I made sure I got a picture of the Robin.
Here's a panoramic montage of the Back Yard on June 1st.
