Front Yard Bulbs - 24 April and 2 May 2003As I've said elsewhere, I spent much of 2003 unemployed, so this forced me to cut back severely on my planned changes to the Front Yard. My roomie pays for most of the additions to the Back Yard -- I contribute some design suggestions and a lot of manual labor. The Front Yard and its flower beds are all mine -- with occasional suggestions from him.

So, through the first months of the year, I was impatiently awaiting the arrival of blooms from all the bulbs I planted last fall. The Tulips finally started breaking through in mid-April, but the screwy weather we had in late Winter and early Spring set everybody back by weeks. And the fact that my Front Yard is on the North side set my bulbs back another couple of weeks from other houses across the street on the same block. These two shots (from April 24th on top and from May 2nd on bottom, show the slow growth).

Galanthus, or Snow Drop - 24 April 2003A few of the Galanthus, or Snow Drops (at left), had bloomed by mid-April, but nothing else. A couple of dozen of the Galanthus sprouted leaves, but I guess I'll have to wait 'till next year and hope for more blooms. I couldn't even remember what all I had planted because I lost the bulb planting map over the winter. I had Tulip buds, but no blooms, a few sprouting Daffodils, and not much else, when I went home to Georgia for a 3-day weekend visit over Mother's Day Weekend. Of course, the Tulips and some of the Daffodils burst forth in full bloom while I was gone! Here's what I had on May 14th:
