I started 2003 with lots of plans for the gardens, but also without a job. I was laid off December 31st of 2002. So a lot of my plans are on hold until I can get back to work. Once again, I'll try to document the changes and the change of seasons with separate sections on the Front Yard and the Back Yard. Day-to-day activities and the blow-by-blow so to speak will be recorded in my weblog, My House & Garden.
To the right you can see the front and back of the house as they appeared in mid-April 2003. This is where we started out for the year. We had a really bad Winter -- too warm and too dry followed by too cold and too wet -- and then a damp, chilly Spring. A handful of the roses didn't make it through the Winter. Ditto for the evergreens I "salvaged" from the front and planted in the raised bed at the back of the yard. A few of the perennials on the side of the back yard by the fence seemed to have made it, but we yanked everything out except the mini Bearded Irises. Out front, the Spring bulbs I planted were really confused. Some started trying to come up early, but the got killed off by the weather. The Tulips came up beautifully, as did a few of the Daffodils. The Crocus came up (late), but only a few bloomed. I'm not sure what other bulbs came up without blooming because I misplaced my "bulb map" over the winter. Still, a lot survived from last year, so we could build on that in 2003.
(Here's a view of the Back Yard from the house facing the alley, taken in mid-April 2003. It's a panorama pieced together from four images.)
In addition to 2003 being my first year with Spring Bulbs in bloom, 2003 was also the first year I tried to start some plants from seed. I built a lighted seed-starting stand in the basement and started six trays of seeds on March 31st. I should have started them a month or two sooner. I started some seeds outside in April, using the suggestions I found on the Winter Sowing forum on GardenWeb.
