I've tackled a number of maintenance projects, of course, during my first year of home ownership, but they've mostly been small (replacing a leaking sink trap, changing a couple of light fixtures and outlets, etc.). My housemate did most of the decorating throughout the house, so my first major redecorating projects was to tackle my room. It's rather oddly shaped (see plan at right; 1 square = 1 foot), but overall it's 16'0" by 12'4". The two closets are narrow but deep, and tucked under the eaves. The window on the left of the plan (colored in gold) overlooks the front yard and faces north (marked with arrow in picture of the front of the house). The other window faces east.

My original furniture placement placed the bed under the north window and tucked the desk under the east window (see plan at left and pictures below; a full gallery of before and after pictures is available - click here). This isn't an efficient use of space, and left the room looking and feeling cramped. Plus, there's no room for a chest of drawers or dresser. (For my folding clothes, I used a small unit of storage drawers I placed in the first closet.)
