Sometimes a project can seem simple, but it rapidly turns into a major undertaking! Such is the case with replacing the valance curtains in the kitchen. The black-and-white check curtains came with the house. I've been wanting to replace them with something brighter, and I finally got around to it. The only thing I've ever sewed before (other than buttons) is a shirt I hand-sewed when I was in high school, just to see if I could do it. To make the curtains, I bought one of those little "Easy Sew" sewing machines from Target for $20, and figured it would be a snap. WRONG!!
To begin with, the fabric I chose is a print, so the "wrong side" is not pretty at all. Now I have to get a plain fabric to use as a lining. I can't just double the print because the pattern will show through when lit from behind.
I had planned to just do a simple fold-over hem on each edge, but my roomie convinced me it would be better to sew the two fabrics together in a pillow-case style -- placing the fabrics face-to-face so the "wrong" side is outside and stitching around 3 sides, trim the excess, then turn it right-side out. Then I only do a fold-over hem on the top where I need to make a pocket for the curtain rod to slip through. The little Easy Sew machine is definitely faster than hand-sewing, but it's very difficult to sew a straight line. Well, practice makes perfect, and I think I was getting better by the third hem, so hopefully the early wandering seams won't be noticeable once the curtains are up on the windows!
