After ironing the seams and measuring for the desired height of the valance, I folded the top in preparation for making the pocket for the rod. I'm following the design of the existing curtains, so I'll actually need two long stitched seams along the top. The first is about an inch down and the second is about an inch-and-a-quarter below that. This makes the slot for the curtain rod to go through, and leaves a little puffy part sticking above that. I decided to mark the sewing line by drawing a light pencil line with a metal ruler as my straight-edge. It's still difficult to sew straight, but at least I'm not having to guess where the needle should go while at the same time trying to keep the fabric feeding straight into the machine! And watch out for those straight pins! They hurt!
I didn't really hurry with this. I had other things to do (like starting seeds and running errands and writing some computer code) and I wanted to take my time and get it right. But I finally finished the first valance curtain and hung it. The second one is going much faster and should take me only a couple of days to finish! (NOTE: It actually took me only an hour to pin the 3 sides, mark the line for the stitch, and sew it. I'm just really good at procrastinating between steps!) I think the new curtains make the kitchen look brighter already. Sooner or later, we'll get around to creating the new border with the stencils we bought a couple of weeks ago. In the meantime, it's on to the new chair seat covers for the two kitchen chairs.
